TIER A — At least one published randomized controlled trial in humans.

One small randomized trial (62 patients with anxiety disorders, selank vs medazepam, 2008; indexed in PubMed as an RCT), otherwise small Russian clinical studies; registered in Russia but not FDA/EMA-approved.

Tiers rate the strength of published evidence — not effectiveness, safety, or a recommendation.

04

Overview

A synthetic analog of the immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin, developed in Russia for anxiolytic and nootropic applications. It modulates GABA and serotonin systems without sedation.

Research status Registered in Russia as an anxiolytic; human data limited to small Russian clinical studies, including a 62-patient randomized comparison with medazepam

05

Mechanism

Selank is a synthetic analog of the endogenous tetrapeptide tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro extension for stability. It has been reported to modulate GABAergic neurotransmission and serotonin metabolism and to affect enkephalin-degrading activity in blood; it also retains immunomodulatory activity related to tuftsin.

06

Effects reported in research

Reported outcomes, not promises. Some come from controlled human trials; others may be from smaller or preclinical studies — check the studies below.

  • Reduced anxiety without sedation
  • Enhanced cognitive function under stress
  • Immune system modulation
  • Stabilized mood and emotional balance
07

Safety & unknowns

Registered as an anxiolytic in Russia. Published studies, mostly small and from Russian groups, report no sedation or motor impairment. Not FDA-approved in the US.

Unknowns. Trial safety data apply to the populations, formulations and conditions studied.

Studies [1]

  1. Clinical trial 2008

Efficacy and possible mechanisms of action of a new peptide anxiolytic selank in the therapy of generalized anxiety disorders and neurasthenia

In 62 patients with generalized anxiety disorder or neurasthenia, selank and medazepam had similar anxiolytic effects, with selank also showing antiasthenic and stimulant effects; serum enkephalin-related measures were also assessed.
